IMMIGRANT ENTREPRENEURS
Some say immigrant entrepreneurs may hold the key to Connecticut’s economic future. The data suggests there’s already an impact as individuals from around the world settle in Hartford and grow local businesses. Hartford Business Journal has more.
HIGH SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY CHALLENGE
The Annual High School Geography Challenge in Connecticut has been held at Central Connecticut State University. It’s a fun and challenging competition for Connecticut high school students to test their geographic knowledge, understandings, and skills through a variety of team activities. The Geography Challenge requires students to use 21st century global and cultural literacy knowledge and skills in its activities. At the Geography Challenge students use skills measured in the Connecticut social studies frameworks, the Common Core standards, and the C3—College, Career, and Civic Life—Frameworks.
GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK
Geography Awareness Week is celebrated every third week of November. In 2023, that will be November 14-20. It is celebrated by students, educators, families, schools, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and policymakers around the world. National Geographic has more.

SUMMER IN TANZANIA
Simsbury teen, and recent Ethel Walker School graduate, Emma Paterson is spending part of her summer in Tanzania with the nonprofit Asante Sana for Education, based in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, and founded by a West Hartford resident.

INTERNATIONAL HARTFORD
According to the U.S. Census, during the period 2013-2017, 21.8% of Hartford’s population was foreign-born. In New Britain it was 18.6%; in both New Haven and Waterbury, the percentage was 16.4%. Statewide, the percentage of foreign-born residents living in Connecticut was 14.2%.
